Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. OptiFolder runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly encoders and Web Workers. Your images never leave your device – once the page has loaded, you can even disconnect from the internet.
Is OptiFolder really free? Are there limits?
Yes, it is free with no sign-up, no watermarks and no file-count limits. Because your own device does the work, the only limit is your browser’s memory – folders with hundreds or thousands of images work fine on a typical laptop.
Can I compress a whole folder, including subfolders?
Yes. Choose “Select folder” or drag a folder onto the page. Every supported image in every subfolder is processed, and the ZIP download keeps the same folder structure.
Can OptiFolder overwrite the original files?
In Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers you can save results straight back into the folder you opened, either replacing the originals or into a new subfolder. Other browsers download a ZIP instead. Keep a backup before replacing originals.
What if an image gets bigger after compression?
When you keep the original format and size, OptiFolder never gives you a larger file: if re-encoding doesn’t help, the original is kept byte-for-byte and marked “Already optimized”.
Which formats are supported?
You can open JPG/JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and BMP files, and save as JPEG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. HEIC, GIF and SVG are not supported yet. The video tools handle MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV, plus older formats like AVI in compatibility mode.
Which format should I choose?
For websites, WebP is the best all-round choice: small, fast to encode and supported everywhere. AVIF is smaller still but slower to encode. Keep JPEG for maximum compatibility and PNG when you need lossless output.
Can OptiFolder compress videos or remove backgrounds too?
Yes. The video tools compress, convert and resize MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV files using your device’s hardware video encoder, and the background remover cuts out subjects with an AI model that runs in your browser. Like the image compressor, neither uploads your files.
Does compression remove photo metadata (EXIF)?
Re-encoded images do not keep EXIF metadata such as camera details or GPS location. Files kept unchanged because they were already optimal keep their metadata.
